SindyLee

Financial Coordinator

I work alongside Melissa at the front working on finances or helping make your appointments. My working passion relies in keeping things smooth and organized here at the office. I started my job here at Shuswap Orthodontics after my move from the States in July 2018 and I am loving the experience, opportunity, and knowledge I have gained so far.

I moved from the rainy state of Oregon to the Shuswap to be with my husband, Kevin, who has lived near the lake for the past few years. I am finding Salmon arm to be a beautiful and gentle place to call my home and I look forward to seeing its continual beauty through the seasons and upcoming years! In our time at home we enjoy playing games, taking our dog, Hana, out for adventures and working on projects around the house.

Risa

Dental Assistant/Lab Technician

I am new to the dental field and am absolutely loving it and being a part of the Shuswap Ortho team! Dr. Broadwell is exceptional at what he does and always has the patient’s best interest at heart. I am proud to be working with such a great group of people who make coming to work fun!

At the office you will find me assisting Dr. Broadwell during patient appointments, sterilizing, and running our in-house lab, which includes 3D printing. Currently I am studying to become a Certified Dental Assistant. I am enjoying the challenge and am never bored! There is always something new to learn.

My husband George and I have two awesome kids, Gemma and Austin. We love living in the Shuswap and enjoy the outdoors. Our favorite past times are camping, quading, fishing and gardening. There is no other place we would rather be!

Melissa

Scheduling and Marketing Coordinator

I am usually the first and last person you see when you come to our office. I greet our patients and parents when they come in for appointments, and help coordinate their next appointment. I’m also the one who generally answers your questions over the phone and helps with your insurance. The most exciting thing I do is plan fun events, like our Halloween Candy Buy Back and our Easter Egg Hunt! Above all, however, I love my job because, between my coworkers and all our patient families, I have gotten to know so many amazing people. So, when you come in, I truly hope that you love our office as much as I do.

I grew up in the Lower Mainland and the Philippines—I even lived in the middle of the rainforest, where my school was surrounded by fields of rice. After graduating high school in Manila, I moved back to Vancouver, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Psychology. I then spent a year in Fort McMurray, before finally settling in Blind Bay, where my partner, Trevor, and I now have a house and cat named Garth.

Mae

Certified Dental Assistant

I earned my dental assisting certificate from Okanagan University College in 1996 and completed my Orthodontic Module in 2002 from the University of British Columbia. As a member of our assisting team, I work hard to ensure that all patients feel comfortable and valued, whether they are just starting out with records or getting their braces removed. It is so gratifying to see how a beautiful smile can improve the self-esteem of our patients.

Our office is proud to be a positive part of our community. Dr. Broadwell strives for perfection; he cares about his patients and his results are amazing. Our team accomplishes so much in a day and has time for everyone who passes through our doors. We constantly work to provide the best care for each and every patient.

My husband Brent and I have two sons, Ethan and Isaac, as well as three crazy cats. As a family, we spend our time dirt biking and playing lacrosse. When I have free time, I enjoy the many hikes in the Shuswap area thanks to the local Trail Alliance, the many beaches, and all that makes this the most beautiful place on earth.

Loretta

Certified Dental Assistant/Treatment Coordinator

I received my Certified Dental Assisting training in Edmonton in 1975, followed by my orthodontic designation from University of British Columbia in 1978. I joined this practice in 1985 and, during that time, I was also an instructor for the Orthodontic Module at UBC in Kelowna for five years. My education in orthodontics is vital, but I think that the most valuable things I share with patients come from my own experience with braces. I understand first-hand the needs, challenges, and gratification that our patients experience.

I feel extremely fortunate to work with a doctor who does such excellent work, and who is passionate about his profession and the patients he treat. It is easy to work with someone who creates smiles you are proud to be a part of.

I have lived in the area most of my life, and the place I call home is a beautiful piece of farmland on the Shuswap River that my wonderful husband, Emil, grew up on. We have one daughter and a son in-law, but best of all, three amazing grandsons. Camping, fishing, and exploring with them keeps me busy most of the time. However, I also like to run, enjoy yoga, and some day hope to do all the woodworking and yard projects I have been planning for years!

Christi

Office Manager/Treatment Coordinator

I am here to assist patients and parents during their initial office visit and ensure their experience is both pleasant and informative, and that when they leave the office, they have all the information they need to proceed and feel confident in the decision they are making. I started working in our office in 1989 as a non-certified assistant, then took my Orthodontic Module at UBC in 1992. I have truly worked in every single position in the office from sterilizing, assisting, reception, financial, and now treatment coordinator and office manager.

We have an amazing team in that we truly all enjoy each other and really do have fun each and every day we come in to work. I have been so fortunate to work with two doctors that do incredible work and are passionate about their profession, and a staff that all strive to make every patient feel comfortable and well cared for.

My daughter, Kasey, and I are fortunate to be living in the county and enjoy camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, and gardening. When we are not off exploring, we can be found spending time with family or playing around with the horses, always with our dog, Mischief, in tow.

Dr. Charles Smith

DDS, FRCD(C)

As an orthodontist, I am able to make my patients’ lives better by improving their bite and smile. This is a life-changing experience for so many, and one that has changed my life as well. I can’t imagine the thought of not coming in to work each day to see so many smiling faces, let alone retirement! Orthodontics has truly been a wonderful profession.

Our team is exceptional; they really care about our patients, and I can tell it’s not just a job for them. We have a lot of fun working together! Their combined years of working together averages over 25 years each. I think that is amazing and says so much about their dedication to our profession and caring for patients.

I also feel so fortunate to have Dr. Brian Broadwell join our practice. He is very exceptional and brings a new dimension of orthodontic care to our community. I feel the Shuswap area is very fortunate to have him and his family join our community.

Education and Beyond

I first became interested in a healthcare career when I was quite young. My grandmother had two brothers who were specialists at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and medicine was talked about a lot. I was further influenced when I was in high school and a close friend had orthodontic treatment. He was a cleft palate patient and orthodontic treatment dramatically changed his personality and his life. It’s a change I’ve seen many times in my own patients.

After earning my BSc in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1966, I continued on to receive my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in Edmonton, at the University of Alberta, in 1970. In order to specialize in orthodontics, I earned my Graduate Degree in Orthodontics in Oregon in 1976.

I have always had a passion for learning, and that didn’t stop after my formal education was complete. I graduated from the FACE Foundation/Roth-Williams in 1984 and I am still active in the Roth Williams Study Club in San Francisco. I have also attended a Roth Study Group in Vancouver for 25 years. A typical day there is an intense meeting were we forget about food and drink for eight to nine hours and come away exhausted but revitalized.

Outside the Office

Every day that goes by leaves me feeling blessed to have lived in the Salmon Arm or Shuswap area on a large acreage or farm for the last 44 years. I feel fortunate to have travelled the world but no matter where I go, Salmon Arm remains, in my opinion, the best place in the world to live. It’s interesting for me to hear from so many people in our community who say the same thing about the Shuswap region.

My wife of 45 years, Judy, has made my wonderful life possible. Not only did I find heaven on earth but also being able to spend it with my best friend and kindred spirit. How could it get any better? In addition, I have two amazing children, one of whom, Jamie, lives just down road with his family and two children, Toby and Rose. My daughter Laurie lives in the Vancouver area with her husband Rod and daughter Neve. Pets are many and include horses, dogs, and several cows and calves. We live on the outskirts of Salmon Arm with an amazing wildlife area and corridor crossing our property.

You will likely find me farming or ranching when I am not at the office. Judy and I have recently started The Marionette Winery with our son and his wife, so we will be busy out in the vines or in the winery for the next few years.

I am passionate about so many things and am so lucky to have a life full of so many things I love: helping my kids with building or fixing up their homes and properties; traveling and golfing with my wife; horses and riding in the mountains; spending time with my grandchildren; playing a game of pool with a couple of good friends.

DR. BRIAN BROADWELL

DDS, FRCD(C)

Being an orthodontist is the best job in the world, really! I get to help people look better and improve their confidence. Our patients are happy to be here, and that makes for a fun work environment. We are serious about orthodontics, but we don’t take ourselves seriously. After a few visits, even the most reticent patient is full of smiles! Helping a person improve their confidence with a new smile is very rewarding.

The team here at Shuswap Orthodontics is the core of the practice. If I am the architect of your smile, then they are the contractors. I could not do this without them and consider the team as my partners on an mission to improve lives.

Education and Beyond

After completing my undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University, I attended dental school at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. After graduation, I was quite fortunate to be accepted to a five-year combined residency program in Orthodontics and Prosthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where I was chief resident and recipient of the Patel Award in Orthodontics. I am certified in orthodontics by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and am one of 13 dual-certified orthodontist / prosthodontists in the United States.

I typically acquire over 100 hours of continuing education per year. My wife would call it an obsession, but I have always enjoyed learning and teaching. Throughout my career, I have been awarded four different fellowships in dentistry. I have given several presentations to various dental associations and am excited to present my first international lecture in Croatia this year!

My efforts in continuing education at this time focus on contemporary orthodontic techniques, temporomandibular joint disorders, and growth modification for the purposes of facial balance and airway improvement. Knowledge is truly power, and in healthcare, power translates into helping people. The more you know, the more you can leverage information to improve lives. Improving lives is just cool and makes me feel good!

Outside the Office

I was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and spent much of my childhood growing up in Wyoming. It was during that time in Wyoming where I fell in love with the mountains and snow. I moved back down south for educational purposes but always had a longing to get back to a cooler climate. My family and I feel extremely fortunate to call Salmon Arm home. We have been here 4 years now and still feel like we are on vacation. This is paradise!

I have been lucky to be married to my lovely wife, Jennifer, (who you may see around the office) for 15 years now. We have two very active children, Estelle, who is 11 years old, and Oliver, who is 9. They both enjoy the outdoors, on the lake in summer, and on the ski hill at Revelstoke in the winter.

My number-one hobby is alpine skiing. During the summer months, I enjoy biking, hiking, and wakeboarding on the lake, but it when it starts to cool and snow is in the forecast, I really get excited. I went on my first backcountry helicopter ski trip last season and it was a fantastic adventure!

I am also having a lot of fun as a soccer coach. It’s a great way to have fun with the kids and to contribute to the community. Beyond that, I seem to have a talent for tree-planting. I was fortunate to be able to help our friends plant vines for the first winery in Salmon Arm, and was also invited to help plant the new trees you see along the Trans-Canada at Crazy Creek Resort.

Thanks so much for your interest in our practice and we look forward to meeting you in person!
