Braces for Children

At Shuswap Orthodontics, we use braces conservatively to correct isolated issues in younger children, and to correct misalignments of the teeth and jaws of kids between 11 and 13.

Traditional Orthodontic Treatment for Reliable Results

Braces are an economical, durable, and time-tested method for straightening teeth and improving oral function. They can be used to resolve a wide range of orthodontic conditions relating to both the teeth and the jaws.

For all of these reasons, they make a great choice for kids.

Most kids who need orthodontic intervention to correct misaligned teeth or jaws will start treatment with braces between the ages of 11 and 13, when all their permanent teeth have grown in.

Kids as young as seven may be candidates for braces in rare cases. We use braces on children with baby teeth only when necessary to create space for adult teeth to erupt in the proper positions, to correct crossbites, or to correct certain functional issues.

Free Consultations & Monitoring for Children

Children should visit the orthodontist for the first time around the age of seven for an orthodontic consultation. This visit will give us an opportunity to to determine if any orthodontic treatment is needed.

If it is, we'll commence with a treatment plan. If not, we offer free assessment appointments every six to 12 months until your child is ready for braces.

The Benefits of Braces for Kids

Both your child's disposition and their specific orthodontic condition will factor into our orthodontic treatment recommendation for braces or Invisalign clear aligners.

Efficiency

The fact is, there are certain types of teeth and jaw misalignments that are simply more efficiently treated with braces because they can move teeth more quickly. For kids who aren't super excited about needing orthodontic treatment, braces may mean they can get it over with faster.

Compliance to Treatment

Unlike clear aligners, braces are fixed to the teeth and cannot be removed. This can be a benefit for kids who are not yet mature or patient enough to keep their aligners in as prescribed. Fixed braces can't be lost, and their durability makes them difficult to damage – all potential advantages for kids!

Aesthetics

While traditional metal braces and even self ligating braces don't have the discreet appearance that Invisalign aligners have, they do offer an option for customization.

Coloured elastics can be added and changed out throughout treatment, meaning your child can choose fun colours based on their mood, the seasons, or even their favourite sports teams!

Treatment with Braces at Shuswap Orthodontics

Orthodontic braces traditionally straighten teeth using a combination of brackets, elastic bands, and wires.

But the braces of today aren't the clunky, uncomfortable face-full-of-metal that you might be picturing from decades ago. Modern braces are more streamlined, more comfortable, and (dare we say?) cooler than ever before.
